“I called Malcolm at Computer Help 4U recently following some serious performance
problems with my 4 year old PC. We arranged a home visit and within the visit Malcolm had
identified the probable causes and made recommendations for resolving them. Malcolm then
returned within a couple of days to carry out the improvement s he recommended I now have very
much improved PC performance.
Additionally, he also spent time giving me help and guidance on improving my PC and
on-line security.
I have now asked Malcolm to give my PC a health check twice a year and I have no
hesitation recommending his service.”

Crowthorne Computer Repair Tips
Keeping Your Home Computer Secure
Today’s malware (viruses, Trojan Horses, Rootkits, Spyware, etc) are very different from the
viruses of old which often only caused mild annoyance. The main purpose of today’s malware is generally to
allow a hacker to gain access to your computer to gather your personal and business information (e.g. on-line
banking passwords and credit card details) or to use your computer and Internet connection for a malicious
purpose such as spreading spam. Many computers today have been compromised in this way and their owners are not
even aware of it.
Here we give some tips on how you can help keep your computer secure.
-
Install an Internet Security program suite such as Kaspersky Internet Security or Norton Internet
Security. Internet Security programs such as these not only contain protection from malware but
also contain a software firewall that will help guard against information being gathered from your
computer and phishing protection to help prevent you being lured to a fake web site and entering
your access details (e.g. one that looks just like your bank’s web site).
-
Make sure that Windows Updates are installed automatically. Windows Updates repair security
vulnerabilities and other critical issues in Windows and play an important part in helping to keep
your computer secure. If you have a Windows XP computer and automatic updates are turned on,
Windows Updates will be installed automatically once a month when you shut your computer down.
If you don’t think this is happening go to Start – Control Panel – Security Center –
Automatic Updates and check that Automatic (recommended) is selected. If you have a Windows Vista
computer Windows Updates should also be installed automatically once a month. You can go to Start –
Control Panel – Security – Windows Updates – Change Settings and check that Install Updates
Automatically (recommended) is selected if you’re not sure.
-
Set your security software to scan for malware automatically. Make sure that your security software
is scheduled to automatically scan your computer for malware at least once a week (more often if
possible). Computer users often only scan for viruses if they think that their computer is
infected. By scanning regularly you can be alerted to an infection much earlier. Your computer will
need to be turned on so that the scan can take place – if you forget to turn your computer on in
time do a manual scan as soon as possible afterwards.
Other things you can do to help keep your computer secure are:
-
Email - Don’t open an email attachment or click on a link in an email message unless you were
expecting the email message – if it’s from someone you know, check that they actually sent it
to you first. The same is true for messages sent by instant messaging e.g. Windows Messenger,
Yahoo! Messenger, etc.
-
Internet – If you are asked to install something to enable you to view a web page, beware, this
is a common trick to get you to install Spyware or other malware. Free programs downloaded from
the Internet are another common source of infection.
-
Computer – Installing file-sharing programs on your computer (often used for “free” music) like
Limewire or Kaza can very often lead to virus infections.
If you follow these basic tips you will greatly reduce the risk of your computer being
compromised.
