When you begin to get a problem with your PC, laptop, broadband or wireless equipment it’s always better to seek professional help sooner rather than later.

When you do contact someone it can be difficult to know how to describe the problem and which aspects are important enough to mention and which aren’t.

Here we give some tips on how you can help us help you when you first contact us about a PC, laptop, broadband or wireless problem.

1.      Tell us when the problem started. If you’re not sure, a rough idea of how many days or hours the problem been going on for will help.

2.      Tell us whether the problem started at the same time something else happened. For example, a computer problem can start after a program or piece of hardware has been installed or uninstalled, a broadband problem can start after a broadband modem or Router has been moved and a wireless problem can start after a neighbour installs their own wireless Router.

3.      Give us as accurate a description of the problem as possible. “My computer won’t start” is something we are often told but in order to help, especially over the telephone, we need as much relevant information as possible. For example, if a computer won’t start exactly what happens when it is switched on, i.e. do any lights appear on the tower or base unit? Then what happens? If an error message is displayed we need to know the exact text of the error message. For broadband problems it helps us to know if a Microfilter has been used at every phone socket that has a device plugged in, the make and model of the broadband modem or Router and the lights that are on (with their state and colour). For wireless problems, does the signal stop completely or degrade slowly and when does the problem occur?

4.      Tell us whether there is any pattern to the problem. For example, a computer problem may occur only after a particular program or piece of hardware has been used, a broadband problem may occur only at a particular times of the day and a wireless problem may occur only when a particular electrical device is plugged in and switched on.
